This Week in Science 12/8!!!

This week in science was pretty fun. On Monday Mr. Finley said that some on "stole" his moon rock. The "suspect" had dirty blond hair and was relatively tall. Also they were wearing a hoodie and weight approximately 80-120 lbs.
Suspects:
Brian C. (me)
Nick D.
Mary L.
Stephen S.
Ellen
Jordan M.
That day we started to gather the DNA by swabbing the checks of the suspects. We also set up the DNA test.
On Tuesday we restarted the DNA test because we did it wrong. The steps we took to find the culprit. First the suspects swabbed their checks to gather check cells. Then the check cells were put into Lysis buffer. Lysis buffer breaks down the cells so all that is left is DNA. Next we added pineapple juice which breaks down the proteins in the cell. Next we added alcohol to it so the alcohol sat on to of the DNA and Lysis buffer. The DNA sat right on top of the Lysis buffer and right below the alcohol.
On Wednesday we talked about prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells because that was on the previous night homework. Mr. Finley also "hinted" at a quiz. We also talked about what the AP biology students will do with the DNA we gathered.
On Thursday Mr. Finley was out. So sad. We had as quiz on prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Surprise surprise. We also did a work sheet on gel electrophoresis
Lastly on Friday Mr. Finley returned. That day we talked about that worksheet. we also looked at the DNA on last time before we gave it to the AP biology students. We also discussed some assumptions that are being made about his moon rock being stolen (i.e. maybe it was some one in our class).
